In The name of Allah,The Most Merciful,The Most gracious

The Role of Muslim Women in Daw’ah

“You are the best of the nation raised up for mankind because you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah” [ Ale-Imran: 110]

There many evidences in the Qur’an and Sunnah that obligates ALL Muslims, men and women to do da’wah, and enjoin good and forbid evil.

The Qur’an and Sunnah have expressed the idea of da’wa with the terms; tableegh (delivering the call), enjoining the good (ma’ruf) & forbidding the evil (munkar), recommending one another on the truth (tawaasi), being sent to give good tidings and to warn, clarifying the truth, advising (naseeha) and reminding the people, and debate and discuss with the people in the manner which is best and the struggling to make the Deen prevail.

Allah (swt) says, “Invite to the way of your Lord (i.e. Islaam) with Hikmah (divine evidences), and argue with them in a way that is better.” [16: 125]

What we can notice when we look at the evidences is that they have come in a general form, addressing Muslims as a whole – not being specific to men or women.

The fuqaha have explained that Da’wah to non-Muslims is in origin Fard Kifayah (obligation of sufficiency), meaning if some people are fulfilling it – the rest of the Ummah are not sinful and are encouraged to also perform it. However, it can become Fard Ayn (individual obligation) in the case where we know a non-Muslim who does not know about Islam and is unlikely to hear about it except through you – in this case it is our obligation to convey the message of Islam to them.

Da’wah to non-Muslims differs from da’wah to Muslims which includes enjoining the Ma’ruf and forbidding the Munkar which is an individual duty.

Ahmad narrated on the authority of Abu Bakrah that the messenger said:

“If the people see the Munkar (evil, wrong doing) and they do not change it, Allah will take them with a punishment”.

The Muslims, as individuals, are required to enjoin that which they are commanded with and forbid that which they are ordered to abstain from – if anything happens in front of them that necessitates that – according to the knowledge each individual has.

Furthermore, the Messenger (saw), when addressing the people used to say,

“Let the one who is present convey what he has heard to the one who is absent” (Al-Bukhari).

Consequently, enjoining the ma’roof and forbidding the munkar becomes an individual obligation (fard ayn) for which the Muslim will be sinful if he or she did not undertake it, and he is not excused for abandoning it. Thus the Muslimah, in her daily life with her husband, children, relatives, neighbours, customers, acquaintances or anyone else who they happen to meet; each one of such people needs be given the naseeha (advice), if they failed to perform a duty or was disobedient. How can this not be the case when there are sins that only she may be aware of. Such as a sin committed in front of her at a sitting where no one else is present. If she did not advise them then she will be sinful. No one else can take her place, and in his sphere, nobody other than her can fulfil it. For every munkar that appears in his sphere, no one other than the individual who witnesses it is responsible.

If one of our friends is not wearing the khimar, taking riba, has haram relations with men before marriage or engages in any other definitive haram – then you are obliged to forbid this munkar.

The Prophet (saw) said in a hadith narrated from Imam Muslim from Abu Sa’id al Khudri:

“Whosoever sees a Munkar (an evil or wrong) let him change it by his hand, if he could not let it be by his tongue. If he could not let it be by his heart, and this is the weakest of Iman”

We are also obliged to work to establish the mechanism which will establish the Ma’ruf and ensure the removal of Munkar, the Islamic state – which has been emphasised by the hadith in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet (saw) said:

“Whosoever dies without a bay’ah on their neck dies the death of Jahiliyyah.” [Sahih Muslim]

Women have been expressly addressed with the duty of the da’wah because Allah, subhanahu wa ta’ala, says:

يَا نِسَاءَ النَّبِيِّ لَسْتُنَّ كَأَحَدٍ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ إِنِ اتَّقَيْتُنَّ فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِالْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ الَّذِي فِي قَلْبِهِ مَرَضٌ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَعْرُوفًا

“O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep your duty (to Allah) then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire, but say that which is Ma’roof (good).” [33:32]

Ibn Abbas understood Allah’s injunction to the Prophet’s wives, to “say good,” to mean that they have to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil. This can be taken as a general address to all Muslim women. Allah also says:

“The believers, men and women are Auliya (helpers, protectors) of one another, they enjoin the good and forbid the evil, they perform salah and give away zakah and obey Allah.” [9:71]

It is clear in this verse that women are addressed with this task, just as men, whenever they are capable of undertaking it.

* Removing ignorance, increasing awareness of Islam, and the creation of qualified women da’wah carriers. These results have a lasting and beneficial influence, not only on women and the Muslim community, but also on the whole society at large

* Women’s place and status in Islam would be highlighted and Muslim women would attain a better awareness of their rights and duties.

* Making dawah should be part of our children’s upbringing by making them aware that they are the future carriers of Islam; and Islam is their identity; without it they are lost.

Examples from Muslim women in the past

The Prophet’s companions who left their homes to go places that were thousands of miles away to take the new religion to people also had the support and the backing of their wives. Let’s look at some examples:

- Khadija’s (ra) comfort, help, and support of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam, offer the greatest proof of the vital importance of this role. Khadijah was very rich, and she spent her money to support the da’wah

- If we look at the hadeeth narrated by Abu Saeed that the women said to the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam, “The men are keeping you busy and we do not get enough attention from you. Would you specify a day for us, women? He promised them a day to meet them and educate and admonish them.” (Bukhari) The fruits of this understanding and concern by the women companions of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam, and the attention he gave them, are shining examples and a source of pride for Muslim women

- Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, is also a perfect example of what the Muslim women should strive to be like. After the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, died, Aisha (ra) was the main source of knowledge about the Prophets teachings. She was active in telling people about Islam and giving knowledge to those who sought it. Abu Musa Ash’ari narrated, “We never had a problem to tackle but always found a relief from Aisha (ra). Her knowledge was stupendous.” Imam Zuhri, a Tabe’ie of great renown said, “Aisha was the greatest among the living scholars.”

- Umm Sulaim (ra) teaching her son Anas Ibn Malik (ra) about Islam, even though her husband rejected Islam. When Abu Talha proposed to her (before accepting Islam) she told him that her dowry was Islam, he in-turn embraced Islam and she married him. She gave her son Anas to the Prophet (saw) as a servant.

- Umm Hakeem (ra) was the reason behind her husband embracing Islam, the aunt of Adi ibn Hatem (ra) also led him to Islam. Amra, the wife of Habib Al-Ajami would wake up her husband to make salah at night. Asmaa (ra), the daughter of Abu Bakr, encouraged her son, Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair (ra), to stand up for the truth and not fear death in the face of a tyrant.

- Sumayyah (ra) gave up her life when Abu Jahl killed her for becoming a Muslim. She was the first martyr in Islam.

- Umm Salamah (ra) left her husband and saw her children persecuted when she migrated. (She is the one who narrated the famous speech of Ja’far to Najashi). Umm Ammarah (ra) fought in defence of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam, in the Uhud battle. Tending the wounded in battles was the role Muslim Women played throughout history.

- It is reported that Dawud ibn Husayn (ra), a companion of the Prophet, used to take Qur’anic lessons from Umm Sa’d Jamilah bint As’ad Ansariyyah (ra), daughter of As’ad ibn Rabi who fought in the Battle of Badr and achieved martyrdom in the Battle of Uhud. According to Ibn Athir, Umm Sa’d had memorized the Qur’an and used to give regular lessons.

Even in later generations Muslim women continued to play a large part in Da’wah and the propagation of Islam.

- Nafisa bint al-Hasan (d. 208/824) taught hadith to Imam ash-Shafi’i.

- Ibn Hajar mentioned 12 women who were musnida (transmitters of collection of hadith). He studied with 53 women.

- Ibn Asakir al-Dimashqi (499-571) took hadith from 1,300 male shaykh and 80-odd female shaykha.

What contribution can women make?

Many obstacles and restraints have been the causes behind the weakness and neglect of da’wah work amongst women.

One major reason, is that many men are not convinced about the importance of women’s role and responsibilities in the field of da’wah. This is due to the influence of eastern Mushrik culture where women are seen as slaves to men. Unfortunately some attempt to justify this by misinterpreting Islamic evidences, for example:

The Qur’anic verse: وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ “ …remain at your homes…” [33:33] has been misinterpreted by many, and so has the right of guardianship or Qawama. In many instances we see men objecting to women’s participation in da’wah and thus preventing them from fulfilling their role toward their fellow Muslims and to the larger society in general. Spreading Islam has been made incumbent on all Muslims, men and women.

It is vital that husbands encourage their wives to participate in da’wah work. Unfortunately, not a lot of Muslim women feel that they know enough about Islam to share it with others. They need to realize that it is their responsibility to obtain that knowledge and then share it with others. Many women also feel uncomfortable presenting to groups of people due to various reasons.

Although many women are busy due to their responsibility as a wife, mother, cook, and teacher, inside their homes, etc – as with any fard, we must make time and organise our lives such that it becomes a centre point of our lives. Women have the ability to make a real difference:

- They generally have a great effect on their husbands. If they have strong Iman and character, they have a very good chance at helping their husbands become strong as well.

- Women are more free than men in communicating with other women, either individually for da’wah activities, or in women’s learning and other forums and places of meeting.

- Women stay at home with their sons and daughters, and thus can bring them up as they please.

Practical Steps for women

* Where to do dawah: ideally where people gather regularly, such as the mosques, girls schools – trying to influence the teacher and the curriculum, associations, da’wah groups, friends, families etc.

* We need to start by seeking knowledge and developing our Islamic personalities.
Proper Islamic rules of mixing between men and women must be observed at all times

* Building of the da’wah personality: Da’wah requires sacrifices and therefore women must be prepared to bear the burdens of calling to Islam

* Da’iyat delivering lectures, seminars, sermons, should be able to persuade the listeners by addressing their minds through proofs and evidences.

* Utilising the latest communication technology is important for fruitful dawah. Radio, TV, and the internet are very efficient means for local and international mass-dawah.

* Writing and publishing such as books, newspaper, articles etc are means by which you can easily reach people. Writings should both be eloquent and convincing, through sincere, sound and documented arguments.

So, let us strive to aid in the revival of the Ummah, by being da’wa carriers – possessing thought and articulation to uphold the truth.

Each of us has a gift from Allah we should not ignore our obligation in fear of rejection or failure but, join together to contribute our talents and reasons to share the gift of Islam, truly a mercy from Allah (swt).

وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِمَّنْ دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

“Who is better in speech than the one who calls (people) to Allah, works righteousness, and says I am one the Muslims?” (41:33)

Importance of saying Insha'Allah + Maher Zain - Insha Allah | ماهر زين - ان شاء الله

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Here Allah, may He be glorified, shows His Messenger the correct etiquette when determining to do something in the future; this should always be referred to the will of Allah, the Knower of the Unseen, Who knows what was and what is yet to be and what is not to be, and how it will be if it is to be. It was recorded in the Two Sahihs that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said:
(Sulayman bin Dawud (peace be upon them both) said: "Tonight I will go around to seventy women ﴿according to some reports, it was ninety or one hundred women﴾ so that each one of them will give birth to a son who will fight for the sake of Allah.'' It was said to him, ﴿according to one report, the angel said to him﴾ "Say: `If Allah wills'", but he did not say it. He went around to the women but none of them gave birth except for one who gave birth to a half-formed child.) The Messenger of Allah said, (By the One in Whose hand is my soul, had he said, "If Allah wills,'' he would not have broken his oath, and that would have helped him to attain what he wanted. ) According to another report, (They would all have fought as horsemen in the cause of Allah.) At the beginning of this Surah we discussed the reason why this Ayah was revealed: when the Prophet was asked about the story of the people of the Cave, he said, "I will tell you tomorrow.'' Then the revelation was delayed for fifteen days. Since we discussed this at length at the beginning of the Surah, there is no need to repeat it here.وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِيتَ(And remember your Lord when you forget) It was said that this means, if you forget to say "If Allah wills", then say it when you remember. This was the view of Abu Al-`Aliyah and Al-Hasan Al-Basri. Hushaym reported from Al-A`mash from Mujahid that concerning a man who swears an oath, Ibn `Abbas said "He may say `If Allah wills' even if it is a year later.'' Ibn `Abbas used to interpret this Ayah:وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِيتَ(And remember your Lord when you forget) in this way. Al-A`mash was asked, "Did you hear this from Mujahid" He said, "Layth bin Abi Salim told it to me.'' The meaning of Ibn `Abbas' view, that a person may say "If Allah wills'', even if it is a year later, is that if he forgets to say it when he makes the oath or when he speaks, and he remembers it later, even a year later, the Sunnah is that he should say it, so that he will still be following the Sunnah of saying "If Allah wills'', even if that is after breaking his oath. This was also the view of Ibn Jarir, but he stated that this does not make up for breaking the oath or mean that one is no longer obliged to offer expiation. What Ibn Jarir said is correct, and it is more appropriate to understand the words of Ibn Abbas in this way. And Allah knows best.وَلاَ تَقْولَنَّ لِشَىْءٍ إِنِّى فَاعِلٌ ذلِكَ غَداً إِلاَّ أَن يَشَآءَ اللَّهُ وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِيتَ(And never say of anything, "I shall do such and such thing tomorrow.'' Except (with the saying), "If Allah wills!" And remember your Lord when you forget) At-Tabarani recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that this meant saying, "If Allah wills.'' وَقُلْ عَسَى أَن يَهْدِيَنِ رَبِّى لاًّقْرَبَ مِنْ هَـذَا رَشَدًا(and say: "It may be that my Lord guides me to a nearer way of truth than this.'') meaning, `if you (O Prophet) are asked about something you know nothing about, ask Allah about it, and turn to Him so that He may guide you to what is right.' And Allah knows best. وَلَبِثُواْ فِى كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلاثَ مِئَةٍ سِنِينَ وَازْدَادُواْ تِسْعًا - قُلِ اللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثُواْ لَهُ غَيْبُ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ أَبْصِرْ بِهِ وَأَسْمِعْ مَا لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِ مِن وَلِىٍّ وَلاَ يُشْرِكُ فِى حُكْمِهِ أَحَدًا ( And they stayed in their cave three hundred years, adding nine.) . Say: "Allah knows best how long they stayed. With Him is the unseen of the heavens and the earth.'' How clearly He sees, and hears (everything)! They have no protector other than Him, and He makes none to share in His decision and His rule.)

Getting Over a Broken Heart ~ The Islamic Way

I've made this thread in order to assist the many heart broken individuals we get posting threads in this section. Getting over a lost love is quite a hardship and one can be very confused, emotional and in such pain that they are unable to rationalise the situation without some form of outside help.

I've seen many threads where a person is told to "just get over it" etc and is treated quite harshly when this is not at all the way to deal with such people. I myself can attest to how it feels to experience the highest highs of love as well as the lowest of the lows and then to lose it all. This harsh treatment almost always comes from those who have not experienced the same situation and my advice to those who seek to advise another but cannot help but to be harsh, is that they should simply stay silent and leave it to those who will show some compassion and patience. (I remind myself before others, inshaa'Allah.)

I found an article which, I believe has some excellent tips for those who are lovesick and thought sharing it would be a good idea. I hope this thread can help those who are suffering from heart break to understand better their situation and the whirlwind of emotions and then give them the push they need in order to move on and continue with life stronger then they were before, inshaa'Allah.

Step 1: Accepting Allah’s Qadr

This has got to be one of the toughest tests of qadr. Love muddles your mind and when all you see are the good characteristics of someone it is difficult to see why it is not working out, especially if this is your first real love. How can this brother who is practicing his deen, has a nice beard, soft and caring be wrong for me? How can this sister who is attractive, fun and religious not be my perfect partner?

The key concept to remember here is: you do not know someone until you have lived with them for a substantial time. Even that person does not know what they are like and how they will react in certain situations. Just because you have these elated feelings of love does not necessarily mean this is the right person. Marriage is a struggle and people develop themselves and change with the experience. Only Allah knows your compatibility, only Allah knows what situations you will face and your reactions. Only Allah knows whether or not this marriage will bring you closer to Him or distract you from the real purpose in life. It is only Allah who knows. Have trust in Allah that He has made the right choice for you. For no matter how much this person claims their love for you or vice versa, know that no one can love you as much as Allah.

So firstly, make dua to Allah to ease your pain and help you be content with His qadr. The following is my favorite Hadith regarding qadr as it really fills you with the awe of Allah and His infinite wisdom.

“Allah `azza wa jall said: ‘Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by being inflicted with poverty, and were I to enrich him, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by wealth and affluence, and were I to deprive him, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by good health, and were I to make him sick, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he whose faith cannot be rectified except by disease and illness, and were I to make him healthy, it would surely corrupt him. Verily, from amongst My slaves is he who seeks worship by a certain act but I prevent that from him so that self-amazement does not enter his heart. Certainly, I run the affairs of My slaves by My Knowledge of what is in their hearts. Certainly, I am the All-Knower, All-Aware’.” [Tabarani]

Step 2: Awareness of the love-drug syndrome

An interesting study was conducted comparing drug users to people who claimed to be “madly in love”. They found that brain scans showed people who are in the first stages of love and people who are high on cocaine have the same areas of the brain stimulated while looking at a picture of their “beloved”. In other words, being in the first stage of love is similar to being high on drugs! With drugs, you are not in love with the powder itself – you are in love with the feelings that it gives you.

Similarly, the thing that we love is the special attention, the butterflies in the stomach, the acknowledgment that someone cares about us in a special way, looks at us in a special way, thinks about us in a special way – the constant day dreaming about the future and daily scenarios. So it is not that this person is perfect, it is that this person allows us to feel all these emotions which are addictive. In reality we are not in love with the person, we are in love with Love itself.

Being in love with Love explains how some people overlook major faults in their prospective spouse. I knew a practicing sister who wanted to marry someone who had a drug and alcohol problem. This was because in both cases these “faults” were discovered during the first butterfly phase of love and not before. Alhamdulilah, by the qadr of Allah the marriage did not take place, but it was due to circumstances, not because the sister had realised that they were not a suited match.

Awareness of this love-drug syndrome has two major benefits. Firstly, awareness is power and it breeds hope. Once you are aware that it is the feelings you are attached to, realise you can actually get them elsewhere.

These feelings are not specific to this one person; you will get these feelings with your new, more suitable prospective partner – the one that Allah will put into your life at the right time insha Allah. Love clouds your mind and makes you think that you will not find this strong love and passion with anyone else. But this is simply not true. You will find this love to be even stronger and more passionate with the right person (the one that is written for you in the Lahw al Mahfooz).

The second benefit is knowing that just like a drug-user naturally has withdrawal symptoms when they stop, you too will naturally have withdrawal symptoms, and it will be difficult. Getting over someone is emotionally painful so don’t be too hard on yourself, validate your feelings and allow yourself time to heal. Know that this is common – nearly everyone goes through heartache at some point in their lives, and eventually recover with time.

As a side point: It is not a sin to fall in love; it is a natural emotion which the human species depends on! If you did sin in the process then repent to Allah, He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. Love is a powerful emotion, which is why there are boundaries in Islam. If you have fallen outside those boundaries, repent and move on.

Step 3: Be proactive

Allow yourself time but also get proactive! Marriage is just one of the many aspects of your life; it is not the be all and end all of things. What are your aspirations? What do you want to achieve in your life? Write down a list of goals you want to achieve by the end of the month and get started on them right away. As Muslims, our continuous goal is striving to get closer to Allah, so working on your eman and your relationship with Allah must be included in some way. Focus your attention on moving forward rather than wasting time with something that “could have been”.

Step 4: Move on

In the spirit of being proactive, the last stage is to actively open your heart and mind to someone else. This could be difficult, as naturally comparisons will creep in, but again realise the fact that it has not worked out means that Allah has someone better suited for you. As illustrated in the famous Hadith of the birds:

“If you depend on Allah with due reliance, He would certainly give you provision as He gives it the birds who go forth hungry in the morning and return with a full belly at dusk.” [Tirmidhi]

Allah will provide for you but you have to get up and get moving again. Just like the birds, go out and seek. Make the effort on your part and leave the rest to Allah and His infinite wisdom.

Allah will ask on the Day of Judgment: “Where are those who loved each other for the sake of My glory? Today, on a day when there is no shade but Mine, I shall shade them with My shade.”(Muslim)

The birth of Usamah Ibn Zayd was a happy event that brought joy to the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam and the Muslims at a time when they were suffering greatly from the harassment of Quraish, seven years before their migration to Madinah.

Usamah was the son of Zayd ibn Harithah, the freedman of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, whom he took as his own son before adoption was forbidden, and of Barakah Umm Ayman, the woman who took care of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, during his childhood, and about whom he said: “She is like my mother”.

The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, loved Usamah as much as he loved his father before him, to the point that the companions nicknamed him “Al-Hibb Ibnul-Hibb”, namely the loved one, son of the loved one. Usamah was close in age to Al- Hassan the Prophet’s grandson. He used to put them both on his lap, Usamah a snub-nosed, black boy looking very much like his Abyssinian mother, and Al-Hassan who had a fair skin and sharp features and looked a lot like his grandfather, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam. He would hug them lovingly and say: “O Allah, I love them both, and I pray that You love them.”

One day Usamah fell and cut his forehead so badly that blood covered all his face. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, asked Aisha to promptly clean the wound, but she disliked to do it, so he, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, held Usamah and cleaned the cut, while comforting him with words of affection and love.

If the Prophet loved Usamah when he was a boy, he loved him even more when he was a youth. A Quraish Chieftain offered him, on one occasion, an expensive garment that he bought in Yemen. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, declined to accept the gift because the man was a disbeliever, but he offered to buy it from him. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, wore it once at Jumu’ah, afterward he took it off and gave it to Usamah to wear it.

In his early teens, Usamah was already a young man of high merit, who showed the signs of a great leader. He was wise, brilliant and extremely courageous. He and three other youth left on the day of Uhud to join the Muslims in the battle. But the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, did not permit them to participate due to their young age. They returned home with their eyes bathed in tears for not being able to fight under the Prophet’s banner.

When the battle of the Trench (Al-Khandaq) started, Usamah came to the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, with a group of his friends to ask permission to participate. He stretched himself to look taller than he was. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, took pity on him and allowed him to join. He was fifteen years old.

On the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, entered the city riding his camel, his head lowered out of respect to the sacred place. Behind him on his camel was riding Usamah. Abdullah Ibn Umar said: “I got ahead of people, and Ithe Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, enter the Ka’bah with Bilal and Usamah.”

A short time later, the battle of Hunayn took place. Twelve thousand men from among the Muhajireen, the Ansar, and the newly reverted, joined the Prophet to fight the tribe of Hawaazin in the mountain pass of Hunayn.

Usamah participated also in the battle of Mu’tah against the Byzantine. The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, appointed Zayd Ibnu Harithah at the head of the expedition. When they arrived at Mu’tah they were met by a huge army that was manifold their size. Zayd, however, preferred to fight and attain martyrdom rather than withdraw. Usamah fought alongside his father Zayd. Never before did he see such courage among the Muslims who fought against one of the two greatest, most equipped armies in that time.

Usamah had another encounter with the Byzantines, this time as a leader himself. After his return from Hajj, the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, ordered the people to make an expedition to Syria and put over them Usamah. He ordered him to lead his cavalry into the territory of Balqa’ and Ad-Daarum in the land of Palestine. The men got ready, and all the first emigrants joined Usamah. He was thus leader over such eminent Sahabahs (companions) as Abu Bakr and Umar. This was the last mission, which the Prophet dispatched.

Now Abu Bakr was chosen as the Khalifah, and Usamah was awaiting orders from him. But a group from the Ansar that the expedition should be postponed until a later time. They sent ‘Umar to talk to Abu Bakr and told him: “If however Abu Bakr insisted upon sending the troops, then ask him to appoint a commander who is older than Usamah.” As soon as he heard what Umar had to say, Abu Bakr got up, took him by beard, and said: “May your mother lose you, O Ibn Al-Khattab! The Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, has appointed him and you want me to take him down? By Allah I will never do it!”. Umar was very angry when he returned to the men. “Move on,” he said, “By Allah you have caused me great embarrassment.”

Abu Bakr marched with the troops to the outskirts of Madinah, while he was holding the reins of Usamah’s mount. Usamah said: “O Khalifah Abu Bakr, either you mount with me or I dismount.” “No by Allah,” he replied, “You will not dismount and I will not ride”, “It is only a small price that I dirty my feet for the sake of Allah”. Then he leaned toward him and said, “If you see that you can give permission to Umar to stay in Madinah to help me, do so”. Usamah agreed to it.

Usamah executed the orders of the Prophet and the Khalifah. He reached the territory of Balqa’, and the fortress of Darum. By doing so he has broken the myth that the Byzantines were unbeatable. Usamah returned to Madinah with a great booty, and lost none of his men. It was said “People no army that was safer and richer in booty than Usamah’s army”.

As long as he lived, Usamah was loved and respected by the sahabah. They used to give him precedence over others because of the love of the Prophet, sallallahu alayhe wa sallam, for him. When Umar became Khalifah he used to give him a greater pension and used to say to his son who once made the remark to him: “You are not better than him. the Prophet loved his father (Zayd) more than your father, and loved him more than you, and he appointed him a commander over me”.

Usamah died on the fifty-forth year of Hijrah, and was buried in Madinah. , and with all the sahabah who loved and respected him.

Real happiness and peace can be found in submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world. God has said in the Quran:

“Truly, in remembering God do hearts find rest.” (Quran 13:28 )

On the other hand, the one who turns away from the Quran will have a life of hardship in this world. God has said:

“But whoever turns away from the Quran, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.” (Quran 20:124)

This may explain why some people commit suicide while they enjoy the material comfort money can buy. For example, look at Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), formerly a famous pop singer who used to earn sometimes more than $150,000 a night. After he converted to Islam, he found true happiness and peace, which he had not found in material success.
